SHEFFIELD Wednesday winger Michail Antonio believes the Owls fans can play a significant role in keeping the club in the Championship.

Antonio, who signed for Wednesday during the summer from Premier League Reading after impressing during a loan spell at the end of last season at Hillsborough, says the ‘amazing’ support of Wednesdayites is something the players talk about and use as motivation. He told The Star: “The fans are amazing. Everyone says they are.

“Even during the run we’re on they’re right behind us. On Twitter the comment I always get is ‘onwards and upwards’, they’re being so positive.

“When we play they’re like a 12th man to the team. We need the fans to believe in us. While they believe that we can do it then we’ll believe it too.”

Antonio, aged 22, has started every match for Wednesday, scoring five times in his 24 appearances.

The Owls travel to South Yorkshire neighbours Barnsley on Saturday seeking to end a run of seven consecutive defeats that stretches back to November 3 when Dave Jones’ team beat Peterborough 2-1 at Hillsborough.

Both Wednesday and the Reds are in the Championship’s bottom three.

A victory for either side doesn’t guarantee they’ll move clear of the relegation zone but would provide a timely boost before a busy Christmas and New Year that will see the Owls play four times in 11 days.

Antonio said: “Nobody likes to lose, but if we’re going to have run like this it’s better to do it at the beginning of the season rather than at the end.”
