Steve Howard is biding his time as he reaches a crossroads in his career - with a return to Hillsborough not yet ruled out.

The loan striker who helped to ensure Wednesday’s Championship survival last season is training with Hartlepool on their pre-season stay in Holland but is expected to leave them this summer.

He could also be available on a free though he has a year left on his Pools contract.

The 37-year-old has been keen on a full move to Hillsborough - but Dave Jones is also looking at other possible options, among them Kevin Davies, who is being tracked by several clubs.

Howard’s presence with Hartlepool suggests that Wednesday have yet to firm up their interest in him, though Jones has said: “A lot of players will begin pre-season with their current clubs and not the clubs they’re going to go to.”

The one remaining contract issue involving Owls senior players has been cleared up, with Jermaine Johnson signing a one-year deal as expected.
