DAVE Jones has shown that he is no quitter as he attempts to end the worst run of his management career.

The Owls’ defeat by Watford was the 12th in their last 16 league games.

Jones’s comment that his career record stands up to scrutiny reflects the fact that he took little Stockport up to the second tier in his first job; stabilised Southampton in the Premier League, took Wolves into it, and had three near misses in trying to do the same at Cardiff, whom he also led to the FA Cup final.

Then came the promotion feat with the Owls and one of the best starts by a new manager in Wednesday history: 17 games unbeaten.

But in effect he is now fighting to keep his job.

Watford boss Gianfranco Zola says that the Owls can recover: “I shook hands with him (Jones) and wished him good luck. They are a good team; they just need to find a bit of tranquility and the quality will come through. They came up, now they are finding it a bit difficult but they have good quality players.

“They just need to keep working and sooner or later the results will come.”

Jones has had that same opinion during the last two months, but two dismal second-half displays, against Leicester and Watford, have raised new questions about the team’s capabilities.

He says: “It wasn’t down to (players) not wanting to do it (against Watford); it was down to bad marking at set plays, then confidence got knocked, certain players lost their discipline and started flying about all over the place and leaving massive holes. Teams in this division will pick you off; which is what Watford did, and what happened against Leicester.”

He expects players who were omitted to be knocking on his door and asking to play but he feels they did not take their earlier opportunities.
