One of the first tasks for the new Sheffield United manager will be to determine the fate of three of the most experienced players on the books.

Dave Kitson, Barry Robson and Danny Higginbotham are all out of contract and, therefore, their futures are in doubt although they can move on anyway if they wish.

Kitson, in fact, looked to be heading for America when he was persuaded to join the Blades a month into the season.

However, the new man in charge will be faced with rubber-stamping the retained list and deciding whether or not he wants to re-engage any of them.

United will be closing in on the new manager now and may well want to finalise matters later this week.

One of the names thrown into the ring, Stuart McCall, dismissed his link with the job as as “pure speculation”.

It was felt that any United interest in McCall would not be officially pursued until after Motherwell’s finally game last weekend. On Monday, McCall made his first signing for next season.

“I’ve always been happy here and if anything at all ever comes up and is put to me, then that is the time to talk about it but, right now, it’s all pure speculation,” he said.
