Craig Alcock has vowed to show Peterborough no mercy at London Road tonight, writes James Shield.

The Sheffield United defender is preparing for his first return to Cambridgeshire since parting company with Darren Ferguson’s side during the close season.

Despite rejecting the opportunity to sign a new contract with United’s divisional rivals, Alcock insisted he has “nothing bad to say” about the team he represented for three years.

But the 26-year-old told The Star he will do “whatever it takes” to help the visitors secure their first win of the new League One campaign.

“I don’t know what type of reception I’ll get,” Alcock, who started his career at Yeovil Town, said. “But whether it’s good, bad or indifferent, the only thing I’m going to be focused on is doing my job.

“It’s actually going to be a first for me. I’ve never played against an old club before but I’m going to be doing it four times before the end (of the campaign) because Yeovil have come down from the Championship.

“But, at the end of the day, I’m a United player now and I’m very proud to be one too.”

Alcock, signed ostensibly to perform at full-back, has nevertheless been deployed at centre-half by United manager Nigel Clough against both Bristol City and Coventry City.

“It doesn’t bother me where I play,” Alcock said. “I’ll do whatever and, in any case, the whole point of the exercise is still the same; stop somebody scoring a goal.

“If I can’t stand five yards inside from where I normally do then there’s probably something wrong. The only difference is that the lads you come up against in the middle are usually quite a bit bigger than those you mark on the wing.”
