Nigel Clough, the Sheffield United manager, has backed Michael Doyle’s captaincy credentials.

Clough made a decision to publicly confront the issue after it was raised during the club’s annual general meeting.

Some supporters expected Doyle to lose the armband when Clough was appointed two months ago.

But the former Derby County chief said: “There seems to be an anti Michael Doyle feeling among a few people at the moment.

“I’ve seen nothing to suggest that he’s not the best captain we have got.

“Maybe Michael is bearing the brunt of the poor start to the season we had. Perhaps that is what’s going on.”

Clough, whose side visit Stevenage tomorrow for an important League One fixture against Graham Westley’s side, is the fifth manager to install Doyle as captain since his arrival from Coventry City in 2011.

“Sometimes, Michael has got it all on to play his own game without having to look after others,” Clough added.

“When you are a player you should look after yourself to a certain degree, not always look to others.”
