A refuge base was set up in the nearby Concord Sports Centre where residents have been gathered since the evacuation.

A Cadent spokesman said: "Our engineers have stopped the gas escape in Hatfield House Lane, Sheffield and those residents who were evacuated from their properties as a precaution earlier today are now being allowed back to their homes.

"The gas main had been damaged earlier in the day by third party contractors carrying out work in the road.

"Cadent will be returning to the area to complete repairs to the network, but this work should not affect residents gas supplies.

"Gas supplies to the area have been maintained throughout the incident.

"We would like to thank local residents for their patience and cooperation during this incident."
