Sheffield Wednesday 4 v Burnley 1

by Matthew Corker

WHAT a start for the Owls, recording their first opening day home win in eight years.

They started like a team possesed, they blitzed Burnley with two goals in the first four minutes of what was an amazing start to the new season, two minutes later Burnley wanted a piece of the action and duly obliged on six minutes, leaving the watching fans thinking they had already got there money's worth from what is an expensive day out.

The first goal came after only 31 seconds Mark Beevers sent a searching ball down the left for Sodje. Wednesday's talisman had time and space to pick out a cross for Tudgay who - aided with a deflection - rocketed the ball into the roof of the net.

The fans had hardly warmed their seats as Wednesday were yet again looking dangerous, this time it was Deon Burton's turn to shine, he intelligently set up Sodje who brought the ball down before smashing a piledriver past the debutant Burnley goalkeeper Penny.

Two minutes later it was another Burnley debutant who was in the limelight but for the right reasons, Wade Elliot easily beat Jermaine Johson before putting in a pinpoint cross for Paterson who despatched a firm header past Lee Grant to score his first ever goal for Burnley.

The game had been rapid and had to calm down otherwise the players would have burned themselves out on what was a muggy day.

Chris Eagles who was the only real threat for Burnley all afternoon went on a run leaving three Wednesday players in his wake before eventually getting tackled on the edge of the box.

Wednesday then got the ball and before Burnley could regroup they had conceded again, Jermaine Johnson who was a menace all afternoon went on a pacy run cutting inside and outside Burnley defenders like a kitchen knife, he eventually got time and space for a cross, it was more of a cross shot which totally fooled the goalkeeper and his defenders, Sodje was alive to the this and duly stuck a foot out to get his second goal of the season.

Soon after this Sodje went down after an inocious challenge holding his knee, it doesn't look good for the Frontman listening to reports today, he was replaced by Leon Clarke.

The team talks at half-time must have been contrasting to hear.

Burnley to be fair came out at half time with more endeavor and did threaten on occasion, with shots from Gavin McCann and Robbie Blake, but all in all Wednesday looked more than comfortable.

The 62nd minute brought the fourth and killer goal as far as Burnley were concerened, even though the Owls were 3-1 up you could sense there was still some lingering doubt around, after all Wednesday had lost there first six games last season.

Tudgay was free near the edge of the box and he got his second of the afternoon and his first two-goal haul since the away win at Stoke last season.

The Wednesday fans went home satisfied with a great start for there team, but worries about there star player Akpo Sodje.
