WHEATLEY Hills, who finished third, ended their 2011-12 North East League Division One campaign on a winning note as they romped to a 79-7 win over visiting Team Northumbia.
The visitors’ hopes of picking up their first win of the season were soon dashed as the Doncaster side quickly slipped into gear and the result was a foregone conclusion long before half-time.
Tries were spread throughout the team with flanker Ryan Craswell and full-back Mikey Hayward both grabbing a hat-trick.
Doncaster Phoenix slumped to a 38-21 defeat at home to Hullensians at Castle Park in their final Yorkshire League Two game of the season.
The South Yorkshire side, who were looking to avenge a defeat at Hullensians, paid the price of some poor defending when turning around trailing 24-0.
Phoenix, who opted to go for tries rather than try and convert to kickable first half penalties, fell further behind in the third quarter and conceded two converted tries.
But as 38-0 down they started to get their act together after centre Owen Denovan had raced in from around 40 metres out for a try converted by Mick Sykes after intercepting a pass.
Full-back Kerry Thomas crossed for a second converted try after joining the attack out wide and making an angled run to the line.
No 8 Adi Shehan notched the club’s last try of the season, again converted by Sykes.
Thornensians also ended their Division Three campaign on a losing note, going down 19-0 at home to Rotherham Phoenix.
