SHEFFIELD maintained their grip on third spot in North One East after a comfortable home victory over Malton and Norton.
Despite loose head prop Tommy Marples and fly-half Mark Ireland missing out through injury, Sheffield broke the deadlock after 23 minutes at Abbeydale Park thanks to winger Gareth Morley, Jimmy Pearson fluffed the resulting conversion.
Both Simon Tillyer and Chris Dale spurned gilt edged opportunities to increase Sheffield’s advantage but the hosts were not to be denied before the break. Dale made amends by sprinting away from the Malton defence before touching down in the corner.
Two minutes after the re-start, the centre crashed over for his second, Pearson landing the conversion to put the hosts 17-0 ahead. Malton shaded the last half an hour as Sheffield took their foot off the gas and were rewarded with a consolation effort from prop Adam Turnbull. Ali Heard was unable to make the kick as Sheffield cruised to a 17-5 success.
Beverley leapfrogged Wheatley Hills into top spot after a resounding 54-17 win at the Doncaster side.
Sheffield Tigers, meanwhile, head to Leicester Lions on on Saturday, kick-off 2pm, in National Two North, pending a pitch inspection on Friday. The two clubs were scheduled to lock horns last weekend but the clash was postponed because of a waterlogged pitch.
In Yorkshire Division One, Barnsley beat Old Brodleians 20-13 while Scarborough won a tight affair at Wath Upon Dearne.
