Rotherham bounced back strongly following their defeat by Worcester in the Championship a week ago as they overcame Yorkshire Carnegie in the derby in the British and Irish Cup, played at Scarborough RUFC last night.
The Titans’ triumph came from two first half tries by forwards Alex Rieder and Jack Preece who had come on as a replacement for hooker and skipper Tom Cruse after 20 minutes.
Rotherham’s handling and ball skills were too good for Carnegie and after leading by 14-3 at half time, the Titans took further control after the break.
Penalties on 53 and 63 minutes by fly half James McKinney kept Rotherham in control as their authority grew against a Carnegie side which was a combination of league and academy players.
The Titans gave debuts to four players, Max Argyle, Craig Dowsett, Sean Robinson and Andy Davies.
And all four showed their potential in a team performance that satisfied coach Lee Blackett.
The one aspect that delighted Blackett was the effectiveness of the defence that prevented Carnegie scoring a try.
Although the side delivered collectively, one individual who stood out was centre Jack Roberts who made several dangerous breaks as he split the Carnegidefence.
Rotherham’s forwards excelled and while they lost some line-out ball, their power produced two fine tries after 25 and 30 minutes.
The Titans’ next match in the B and I Cup is a week tomorrow at Clifton Lane against Aberavon from South Wales.
