Rotherham Titans, third in the Championship, are appealing to all rugby union fans in the Sheffield area to support the Abbeydale clash in Dore between Rotherham and Leeds Carnegie, a week on Saturday.
The league contest between Yorkshire’s two best professional sides at Sheffield RUFC’s ground has been switched to the city because of a disagreement between the Titans and Rotherham Town Cricket Club who share the Clifton Lane venue, now needed by the cricketers at the start of the new season.
Rotherham Titans, who are advising their supporters how to reach Abbeydale by train or bus, are urging their fans to back the team in Sheffield by turning up in their hundreds.
A senior club official said: “We also want rugby fans as a whole to watch the game, the result of which help determine who the Yorkshire sides will play against in the play-offs in May.
“ In the long term, this derby is a massive one because a place in the Premiership for either Rotherham or Leeds is at stake if they were to go on to win the final of the promotion play-offs. “The Rotherham-Leeds game is an excellent opportunity for rugby people in Sheffield to watch top class rugby on their door step, one which does not come along too often.”
