Bedford Blues 27 Rotherham Titans 0

Rotherham’s Championship season is over and done with, and now the priority at Clifton Lane is to put together a highly competitive squad for the 2012-13 campaign.

Titans were beaten for the fifth time in the promotion play-offs and finished bottom of Pool B with only one win.

Bedford, whose handling and running game at Goldington Road were superior to Rotherham’s, scored four tries, and the East Midlands’ club now face London Welsh in the promotion semi-finals.

Rotherham coach Andre Bester said after the match that he would announce his new squad at the end of the month.

However, details have emerged of the new players thought to have been signed.

Macclesfield, an ambitious and successful club , are supplying a new scrum half and full back, so they will join Dan Baines, the Rotherham hooker, who began his career with the Cheshire side.

Northern Ireland, where Bester coached before coming to Rotherham, produces some of the best young talent in the UK, and it is understood that he has persuaded a fly half from the Ulster Ravens to play at Clifton Lane next season.

The Titans’ coach will also be stepping up his search for a new winger to replace Shane Monahan, snapped up by Premiership club Gloucester.

The Irish winger is one of six players who has been recruited by top class sides in England, Wales and Ireland.

Bester is known to be delighted with the quality of the players he has brought in, and now that Leeds have released several of their squad, it is possible that a forward, such as lock Tom Denton, may be tempted to approach Rotherham.

Among the players expected to report back for training in July will be fly half Garry Law, the Championship’s leading points’ scorer with more than 200, who has signed a deal for two years, says:

“Listening to Andre talk about the calibre of player he is bringing in, Rotherham could achieve something special.”

Rotherham Titans: Foden, Homan, McCall, Nonu, Monahan, Godfrey, Williams, Kilbane, Stagg, Hooper, Patrick, Griffiths, Kirwan, Dougall, Taulava. Reps: Baines, Harris, Vaioleti, Maddison, Copeland, Rhodes, Hamilton.
