SHEFFIELD Tigers slipped a place in National Two North when they were defeated 30-23 at Hull Ionians.

Ionians took the initiative with an early try, although Jonny West kicked the visitors into a 9-5 lead with a hat-trick of penalty goals.

Ionians turned round 10-9 ahead, and they doubled their points before Tigers scored again with a try by winger James Broadley, converted by West.

After conceding a penalty, Tigers fought their way back to tie at 23-23 when Pete Swatkins raced over. But they were left to salvage a losing bonus as Ionians sub Sam Bowring, with his first touch of the ball, raced through from halfway.

In North One East, Sheffield notched an 11-6 home win over Old Brodleians yet slipped one place to fifth as rivals Percy Park coasted to a 95-0 victory at Team Northumbria. Sheffield were 6-0 down at half-time, but they hit back in the second half with Donal Collins kicking a penalty and full-back Ewan Reed touching down to make it 8-6. Finally, Collins added a second penalty.

Dinnington, in bottom place, went a step nearer relegation from Yorkshire One when they were defeated 25-8 at Huddersfield YMCA.

After conceding an early try, Dinnington levelled when prop John Marshall crashed over, but Huddersfield were 18-5 ahead before the visitors scored again with a penalty goal from scrum-half Chris Williams. A late converted try by YMCA dashed hopes of a recovery.

Leaders Barnsley strengthened their position in Yorkshire Two with an 18-14 home win over second placed Bradford Salem, although the visitors have a game in hand.

There was no score for the first 20 minutes until Barnsley full-back Andrew Appleyard got over for a try which Patrick Jensen converted, and within five minutes Salem had equalised. Barnsley turned round 12-7 ahead after a second try from winger Scott Hinchcliffe, and fly-half Jensen gained the first points of the second half when he slotted over a drop goal.

But within two minutes Salem were breathing down Barnsley’s neck with a second converted try, and although Jensen added a late penalty it was not enough to stop Salem snatching a losing bonus.

Sheffield Medicals, in second place in Yorkshire Three, scored an 18-0 home win over Leeds rivals Burley.

Stocksbridge had a field day in their Yorkshire Five clash with Adwick le Street at Bolsterstone, running in ten tries in a 71-0 romp.

Full-back Scott Bowskill scored a hat-trick as well as converting nine of the tries and adding a penalty goal.

Centre Ben Senior also touched down three times, and there were two tries from right winger Luke Horton.
