The 20-14 win gives the ninth-placed Dore Moor side back to back wins and they will hope to carry this form into their next match when they travel away to Chester on Saturday.

Across the city, Sheffield RUFC continued their dominance of the National Three Midlands Division with a comeback win against Old Halesonians.

The victory is Sheffield’s fourth in succession and favourable results elsewhere at the weekend leave the Abbeydale side three points clear at the top of the table.

Sheffield head coach Adam Byron said: “It was a tough game as we were carrying a few injuries from the cup game the week before.

“It was a game we were confident in winning but we were well aware we had to make a few changes.

“We had a tough start to the game, we went down a few tries very early and unfortunately we then lost our fly-half to injury, who was actually stepping in as a replacement for the fly-half we lost in the cup match.

“He had a cut over his eye but had stitches on the sideline and was actually able to come back on!

“At half time we were 15-7 down but then scored 24 unanswered points to win 31-15.

“After all the victories we’ve had recently I’d have to say this one is the most pleasing.

“We’ve had some good 50-point wins but this one is pleasing because they clearly came to rough us up a bit but we adapted really well to it.

“We are three points clear at the top which is great.

“I’m disappointed that we lost to Derby earlier in the season and would prefer a larger cushion but it’s a fantastic feeling to be at the top of the league.”

Sheffield travel south to face the Peterborough Lions on Saturday. Top of the table Sheffield are clear favourites to win as the struggling Lions have only managed to win once from seven games so far this season.

And Byron said: “We have a very large squad that has great strength and depth to it.

“We have two people at fly-half out injured now and any team in this league would find it difficult to operate with that.

“But we can move people around in the back line and we have people returning from injury as well so I am more than confident they can get the job done again.”
