Rugby report: Rotherham Titans 19 Nottingham 19

Rotherham threw away a match winning position in a Championship match they dominated when Nottingham's forwards set up a try in the last minute which was then converted just before the final whistle at The Bay.

So instead of leaving Trent Bridge with four points, the Titans travelled back with only two because the game finished as a draw.

As a result,Rotherham have dropped a place and are now eighth on 22 points.

For almost the entire game, Rotherham were in control as the pack dictated events to create two first half tries for winger Ben Foley and flanker Tom Calladine, scoring against his old club.

The Titans’ front row of Tom Williams, Ben Cole and Jo Rees were far too strong as they forced Nottingham to concede 10 penalties at the scrum.

Given decent ball, Rotherham’s backs attacked frequently and with full back Will Goodwin joining the line on his return from injury, the Titans attacked dangerously, none more so than Foley who touched down on 29 minutes.

Soon afterwards, Calladine fought his way over in the 35th as the Rotherham forwards smashed the Nottingham pack who had been awarded a five metre scrum near their line.

Calladine’s celebrations were more than justified so it was a disappointment that fly half Caolan Ryan failed again with the conversion.

But Ryan, who looked sharp on his full Championship debut, did add a penalty to make it 13-12 on 50 minutes.

Once Ryan had been replaced by Will Robinson, Rotherham’s control was strengthened as he put over two rapid penalties on 79 and 80 minutes-points that increased the Titans’ lead to 19-12.

With time running out for Nottingham, it appeared that Rotherham had clinched an important away win, but their game management let them down. The home side were allowed too much possession and with the Titans losing control, their opponents took advantage.

Flanker Rob Buckley crashed over to make it 19-17 and as the referee checked his watch, fly half Mich Lamb’s conversion went over to draw the game and give his side a share of the points.
