Matt is set for Knights’ derby battle

Return: Matt Challinor

Return: Matt Challinor

DONCASTER Knights’ vice-captain Matt Challinor is set to return to action in tomorrow’s local Championship derby against Rotherham Titans at Castle Park.

The influential second-rower, who has been out injured for several weeks, was a spectator at Meadow Lane on Wednesday night where Knights crashed to a 40-14 defeat against Nottingham.

Challinor spent two seasons with Titans and is one of a number of ex-Rotherham players in the Knights’ squad hoping to avenge a defeat at Clifton Lane in the first half of the season.

“It’s always tough going there; they are a good home side,” said Challinor, who watched Titans go down heavily at home to Cornish Pirates on Tuesday evening.

“We were always going to be a bit rusty not having played for a couple of weeks, but I think it will be a different story tomorrow,” he said.

“We won’t let the result affect us just as we wouldn’t have done had we won by that score.

“Even though we lost on Wednesday we can still catch them in the league, but to beat them is the biggest thing.

“If we were bottom of the league and they were top it would still be a massive game for us and we’d still be looking to win.

“With the game being shown live on Sky it will act as a big shop window for some of the young lads who have got aspirations of going higher.”

Challinor is expecting a titanic battle up front.

“They’ve got a big pack and they’ve got a very good kicker in fly-half Garry Law, so we’ll have to keep our discipline,” he said.
