Knights primed for reunion with Carter
Well I am pleased to say that we all survived our weekend in Cornwall with the Knights and had a great time although unfortunately the match itself against Cornish Pirates was lost.
The weather was outstanding and the company excellent. The only downside was that we only found a pub that served decent beer - John Smith's Smooth - on the last evening we were there. Still there's always next year.
The highlight of the game for the Knights' supporters was a scorching try from 70 metres out by flying winger Matt Williams which was worth the admission price for that alone.
We have just introduced a new Rugby ezine that will deal solely with forthcoming Knights and "A"/Academy fixtures.
If anyone wants to be added to the distribution, please send an e-mail to johnlowe@drfc.co.uk.
This coming Saturday the Knights are at home to Moseley in our first home championship game of the season.
It will give us the opportunity to welcome back Anthony "Shaggy" Carter, last season's Knights Club Captain, who moved to the Midland's club in the summer.
Also expected to be in the Moseley squad is Ed Styles who played one game for the Knights last season on loan from Sale when we beat Bristol at home. A familiar face to Moseley fans will be Tristan Roberts who we signed in May.
Tristan was last season's leading point's scorer whilst on loan to Moseley from Gloucester. Once released by Gloucester we stepped in for him as he is an impressive player and one who we are sure will delight Knights' fans.
Last season the Championship's integrity was marred by the fact that three of the clubs went into administration and then reformed as "phoenix clubs".
To try to prevent this happening again, from this season onwards, the RFU require all Championship clubs to provide them with an annual business plan (to start from next year); quarterly management accounts to their format, and a set of audited annual accounts. If this still fails to prevent a club going into administration the following penalties will apply:
During Stage 1 (the first 22 games) - the deduction of 20 league points, automatic placement in the Relegation Pool play off AND a deduction of 10 league points in that pool (I am not sure of the logic behind the 20 points deduction if a club is going to be automatically placed in the relegation pool anyway)
During the Promotion Play-Offs - a deduction of 20 points plus a further 10 points the following season
During the Relegation Play-Offs - a deduction of 10 points with a deduction for the following season of 10 points in the Championship if not relegated.
