Knights target quarter-final spot

DONCASTER Knights will go into battle against Pontypridd at Castle Park tomorrow (2.30pm) with a place in the quarter-finals of the British & Irish Cup in their sights.

"They have changed the format this season and the top two sides in each of four pools will go through to the quarter finals and a win on Saturday would just about secure our spot," said Knights' boss Lynn Howells.

"We were drawn in the same group last year and we went down there and beat them, but they have recruited well and they have got a lot of loan players from Cardiff Blues playing for them and they are a good side.

"They like to throw the ball about and they've got a very good back-row in Darren Lockyer and winger, Gareth Wyatt, who I coached when I was in charge down there, is also a very good player.

"So they've got a sprinkling of very good players now, so it won't be an easy game. But we are going into it in a good frame of mind following last weekend's victory in Llandovery.

The Welshman, who is leaving Knights at the end of the season, admits that he is looking forward to the game. "They used to be one of the biggest clubs in Wales and they have a proud tradition and it will be good for the people of Doncaster to see them playing at Castle Park.

"They are reported to be bringing 400 supporters, which will be good for the club, and it will good for Doncaster to see how supporters react differently in Wales than in England."
