Doncaster Knights thumped South Yorkshire rivals Sheffield Tigers 74-5 in their first pre-season match of the 2013/14 campaign - with debutant Paul Jarvis claiming a hat trick of tries.
It took the hosts just nine minutes to get back into scoring ways as former Coventry winger Jarvis carried the ball over the line following a perfectly-timed pass from Bevon Armitage. However, Dougie Flockhart failed to covert as the score stayed 5-0. Roberto Santamaria made it 10-0 moments later as Flockhart found his range for 12-0 in front of a 600-plus crowd at Armthorpe’s Castle Park.
Winger Flockhart was then on the try scoring sheet as he collected a Paul Roberts kick in the corner but was unable to add the extras as Doncaster led 17-0 with 23 minutes gone.
Sheffield then enjoyed a decent spell of possession and carried the ball down the left searching for a comeback try, however, a crunching tackle from Armitage saw the Tigers lose momentum as Clive Griffiths’ men defended stoically.
Tough-tackling Armitage later capped off a sublime Knights attack to extend Doncaster’s lead as he raced nearly half of the field to touch down between the posts - giving Flockhart the easiest of conversions.
Sheffield did manage to get off the mark in the 33rd minute when Alex Graham capitalised on a lack of concentration in Knights’ defence, however, that proved to be the visitor’s only score of the game as they failed to add the extras.
Griffiths’ men got back into their attacking flow as Flockhart and Jarvis collect a brace apiece with the former converting once.
Moments later the strength of impressive prop Tom Davies saw him pile over to give Doncaster a strong half-time lead of 41-5 - Flockhart’s resulting kick struck both posts before bouncing to safety for the last kick of the half.
Knights were in stunning form after the restart with quick-fire tries coming from Michael Hills and Samoan debutant Paul Eti-Slater. Doncaster’s new kicker Paul Roberts converted both for 55-5.
Jarvis then collected his hat trick of tries in a dream start for his new club to see Doncaster cruise into a 60-5 lead.
Trialist Edu Sorribes Ramirez failed with the conversion but made amends when Scotsman Colin Phillips produce a clever dummy and Ramirez went clear for his first Doncaster try. Will Carrington strongly kicked over for 67-5.
Just minutes before the final whistle, Mat Clark produced the try of the game as he sprinted the length of the pitch, showed clever footwork and evaded the oncoming challenges before touching down. Carrington’s successful conversion was the final kick of the game as Knights ran out comfortable 74-5 winners.
