Doncaster Knights: November could be “make or break” our season, says Griffiths

After a shock defeat to Henley Hawks, director of rugby Clive Griffiths admits the pressure is ramping up for Doncaster Knights’ title tilt.

The Knights are three points clear of Rosslyn Park at the top of SSE National League One but suffered their first loss of the season against Henley on Saturday.

This weekend they welcome Tynedale to Castle Park, who, at second-to-last in the division, could offer Doncaster a way to get back on track.

And Griffiths wants victory to spark an unbeaten November – a month in which they face title challengers Esher and Rosslyn Park.

“The loss was very disappointing ahead of the game against Tynedale, which is the biggest match of our season so far,” said Griffiths.

“We have to take it on the chin, we’re not going to dwell too much on the defeat, especially as we have four massive games in November which could make or break the season.

“We’re looking at all of them as must-win games so losing to Henley like that was deflating.

“We didn’t leave empty-handed which is a positive, a bonus point like that can be crucial at the end of the season.”

Doncaster weren’t their usual attacking selves against Hawks, totalling just 10 points compared to the 257 racked up in their seven prior matches.

But instead of dwelling on such the 11-10 defeat, Griffiths insists his players will use the clash against Tynedale as an outlet for their frustration.

“I don’t think we’ll need to work too hard to refocus the players, they will be determined to put things right,” he added.

“We’ll talk about areas we can improve and then make sure we don’t make the same errors in converting against Tynedale.”
