Doncaster Knights flanker Latu Makaafi has been named Greene King IPA Championship Player of the Month for September.

The Tongan bagged no fewer than eight tries to send him to the summit of the league’s try-scoring charts.

He beat Aaron Pinches (Moseley), George Perkins (Bedford Blues), Peter Lydon (London Scottish) and former England international wing Tom Varndell (Bristol) to claim the monthly honour.

Makaafi said: “It means a lot and it is an honour to win the Player of the Month award.

“I would like to say thank you to every single person who voted for me and to all my teammates for their support, without them I wouldn’t have been nominated.”
