Doncaster Knights get the ball rolling on the pitch today but this weekend is not all about rugby for the men from Castle Park.
Clive Griffiths’ side visit National Three North outfit Hull RUFC in their first pre-season run out.
But the match is also the climax of a three-day ‘team bonding’ trip for Knights’ new-look squad.
Griffiths said earlier this week: “I’ve spoken to Gary Pearce [Hull RUFC’s director of rugby] who tells me that they have recruited really well and they’re aiming to bounce back up to National Two and the first attempt, like we did from National One.
“I’m sure there will be plenty of team building occurring on Saturday night but we’ll get through plenty of work as well.
“We’ve got a full training programme. On Thursday we’ll train here in the morning then go over to Hull to stay in Cave Castle who have been very good to accommodate us and give us use of their leisure facilities and golf course.
“We’ll head out for a team meal on Thursday evening, do the Captain’s run on Friday, before some more leisure activities in the afternoon and playing on Saturday.”
Doncaster’s squad also took part in ‘competitive training’ with Loughborough Students earlier this week.
“We‘ve three warm up games as well as the hit up against Loughborough so there is plenty of opportunity for boys to put their hands up,” said Griffiths.
“We are carrying a couple of injuries, some from the end of last season in Alex Shaw and Colin Quigley and a couple of new ones, Ben Hunter and Jim Wigglesworth. “They will not feature against Hull but hopefully later in pre-season, meaning that there are openings for other lads.”
