WHEATLEY Hills returned to winning ways in North East One after back-to-back defeats against the top two sides with a 40-23 victory over visiting Pontefract.

The West Yorkshire side drew first blood with an early converted try.

Wheatley, who climbed back into third spot, went close to a try on several occasions before No 8 Gaz Burns scored the first of his three tries with a pick-up-and-drive from close range on 15 minutes. Guy Townsley added the extras.

The club’s leading tryscorer this season, he forced his way over for a second try on 22 minutes. Townsley again added the extras to make it 14-7.

The Moor Lane side closed the gap to one point with two penalties, but centre Mickey Hayward gave the Doncaster outfit more breathing space when cutting inside his marker to score out wide. Townsley failed to convert but was back on target following Burns’ hat-trick try on the stroke of half-time.

Wheatley continued to take the game to Pontefract in the third quarter but didn’t add to their account until the 57th minute with a good try by skipper Tom Buckenham. Townsley again added the extras to make it 33-13.

Winger Tom Barker scored the last of Wheatley’s six tries about ten minutes from time after cutting in from the wing and touching down near enough for Townsley to again tag on the extras.

Pontefract kept battling to the end and grabbed a second converted try.

Doncaster Phoenix kept their Yorkshire League Two top-three hopes alive with a 40-23 win over Leeds-based Roundhegians at Castle Park. They had the game in the bag by half-time after building up a 28-13 lead with tries by Oliver Clark, Doncaster Colts’ winger Jordan Ajimati and former Doncaster winger Chris Conway.

Player-coach Dan Storey converted two of the tries as well as kicking three penalties. Back-rower Nick Byrne and fly-half Jono Storey added second-half tries as the home side opened up a 40-13 lead.

Thornensians suffered a disappointing 20-10 Division Three defeat away at lowly Halifax Vandals. Bottom club Adwick slumped to a 61-0 defeat away to joint Division Five leaders Wensleydale.

Wheatley Hills beat Dinnington 18-7 in Yorkshire 2nd XV League Division Two.

Doncaster Phoenix Seconds recorded a 36-3 Division Three win at Roundhegians. Johnny Woodcock bagged a brace of tries with leading try-scorer Wayne Barnes bagging his 20th of the season. Tom Goodchild also grabbed a first half try, two of which were converted by Ben Millar. Tim Elliott and Joe Matthews added second-half tries.
