Bet on Brett for Knights
DONCASTER Knights' bosss Lynn Howells, who will leave the club at the end of the season, is backing his No 2 Brett Davey to take over at Castle Park.
"I brought Brett to the club with an eye to taking over from me," said the Welshman. "He is taking his Level Four badge and has certainly got the rugby knowledge and man-management skills.
"It is always sad to leave a club because you make so many friends. The club, and certainly the officials at Doncaster, have been very good to me, but it is the right time.
"I think it will be good for the club to get someone in with new ideas at the end of the season to move it forward again. I think after three or four years the players have heard it all before and, from my point of view as well, I need to move forward and face a fresh challenge.
"I'm quite open minded to do anything, really; I just feel that it has to be another club. I'm in a nice position to be in because I've got no pretension to be an international coach - I've already done that so I don't need to do it again.
"At this stage of my coaching career I just enjoy bringing players in and seeing them improve and sometimes move on to bigger things, and to see the club improving. I think the club will see the benefit of what has happened over the next couple of seasons."
One of the criticisms. as did his predecessor, that Howells has faced during his time at the club is the comparative lack of home grown talent.
"Doncaster are playing in the second tier of English Rugby and it is difficult for young players," he argued. "I think some people at the club, and older players, sometimes find that hard to grasp.
"Whereas before when we were playing at a lower level the club was able to move players through from the Colts. It is much more dificult to do now because the level we are now playing at is so much greater.
"What tends to happen is that the better players who come up through the ranks go away and play at a decent level and then you pull them back if you feel that they are good enough.
"It is certainly important that you don't lose sight of the young players who are out there. We were lucky with prop Lewis Theide, but it has taken him a couple of seasons, when he didn't play a lot, to start to come through."
