12-hour Tigers ready to touch new heights
SHEFFIELD Tigers juniors are ready to run up a world record - a 12-hour touch-rugby match.
Players, coaches and parents at the Dore Moor club will take part in the gruelling non-stop exercise on Saturday.
The idea arose from a gift from a dad to his sons.
Junior coach Ted Talbot explained: "I am beginning to wish that I'd never bought the Guinness Book of Records for my two lads (George, aged 10, and Silas, 11). They discovered that there was no entry for the longest game of touch rugby, so they decided to try to set one and soon got all their mates excited about it too."
Guinness confirmed there was no current entry of this nature but ruled that only a 24-hour match would merit their full recognition.
"The lads were undeterred," said Ted.
"But, for the sake of the parents and all the other coaches, I managed to persuade the boys that perhaps we should see if we can manage just the 12 hours first."
The match will take place from 8am to 8pm, with players rotating at regular intervals.
"It`s also chance for anyone wanting to take up rugby with us next year to come along, look round and even have a go at touch rugby for half an hour" added Ted.
There will be a lunchtime barbecue, and the clubhouse and bar will be open, with the final British Lions Test against South Africa being shown on the big screen in the afternoon.
Local firms Edmundson Electrical and Silvapower Ltdare sponsoring the 12-hour attempt and organisers are hoping more will follow suit.
