Woodcock mulls over Eagles return

LONG-serving full-back Jonny Woodcock has been told that the ‘door is always open’ for a return to Sheffield Eagles.

Woodcock is the biggest name missing from the Eagles squad as they prepare for the new season.

After 18 months on the sidelines following major knee surgery Woodcock made a dramatic return late last year to help the Eagles to their first ever Championship Grand Final. The 30-year-old is playing rugby union for Doncaster club Wheatley Hills but Eagles boss Mark Aston says switching back to the 13-a-side code is still an option.

“Jonny came back last season and fought his way into the team in the play-offs,” said Aston. “He’s a great character and we have a lot of respect for him. I’ve spoken to him about his (first team) chances.

“He’s gone back playing rugby union and at the end of their season he’ll make a decision on what he wants to do. ”

Woodcock, a teacher at Brinsworth High School, Rotherham, scored nearly 1,000 points for the Eagles after joining from Doncaster in 2006 but has struggled with injuries in recent seasons. As a specialist full back he would have to challenge Samoan internationals Quentin Laulu-Togagae and Misi Taulapapa for the number one shirt.

Aston added: “There are lot of roles Jonny could play, he could fight for a first team place, he could work with the junior players or the reserves. Jonny will always have a place here whether it’s coaching or playing.”
