Wildcats backer puts shirt on Dons too

NOT content with saving one of the most famous rugby league clubs in the game, businessman Andrew Glover is also backing Doncaster.
The owner of West Yorkshire Windows took over struggling Super League outfit Wakefield Trinity Wildcats last year when there was a real chance of them going out of business - even though he admits that he was mainly an armchair follower of the sport.
“I didn’t see a live match involving Wakefield until the day after I bought the club,” he said at the firm’s Doncaster store on the York Road trading estate this week.
“Why did I do it? We just fancied a challenge.”
Said Dons’ chief executive and joint owner Carl Hall: “I first met Andrew when he got involved with the Wildcats and we’ve sort of stayed in touch and become pretty close friends.
“I’ve been over to Wakefield to speak to him about doing other things to help the club which hopefully will come to fruition. “During our talks he said that he was interested in taking out a sponsorship package for the back of our shirts, which came as a nice surprise.”
Said Glover: “We put our name on Wakefield’s shirts and it has proved a phenomenal success in terms of the business, so when I was speaking to Carl I thought it was worth the risk and hopefully we’ll get something out of it.
“I hope Doncaster do well. They seem to be on the right track.
“As for Wakefield I’ll be looking for us not to be embarrassed like we were at times last season. If we finish in the top eight we’ll have done amazingly well.”
Looking ahead to the 2012 season, Hall said: “I’ve been pleased with how things are looking and I think we’ll not be far off if we can stay healthy.”
