Thumbs down as McDonald ruled out for season

LOOSE-forward Dane McDonald is out for the rest of the season after his comeback game for Sheffield Eagles ended in pain and heartbreak.

The Australian broke the thumb on his right hand in two places but played on for more than 40 minutes with the injury.

McDonald started the season as first choice in the back row but has fallen victim to a run of injuries.

The latest blow came as he made his comeback for the reserves – and he played on for 40 minutes despite the pain from the double break.

Coach Mark Aston said: "It's tough for Dane and the club because we needed him back in the squad.

"At the beginning of the season Dane set off like a house on fire and was demanding that I played him every week at 13."

A shoulder injury forced Dane out of the team after 11 games and he started his comeback in the reserves last week.

Aston added: "Dane was playing well but towards the end of the first half he got a nasty knock on his right thumb.

"He had it strapped up and played for the rest of the game but it was diagnosed as a double fracture."

The 21-year-old had an operation at the Northern General on Tuesday.

McDonald said: "The op went well – I don't really remember it. This happening has really done my head in but I'll look forward to next season.

"I'll get over it and can't wait for pre-season training."

Meanwhile, Fijian international Aaron Groom – who was ruled out until next season earlier this month – has had an operation on his damaged his anterior cruciate ligament.
