SHEFFIELD Eagles fans were sore after the team’s drubbing in the Championship Grand Final - but full of pride at the string of top performances that got them there.
Fan, Peter Delamere, said it was simply a match too far.
He added: “We beat Widnes, who will be in the Super League next year, Leigh and Halifax. All great victories, but Featherstone came out of the traps at 90mph - and didn’t let up.
“After 60 minutes we knew the game was up and in the last 20 minutes we made every forward pass and knock-on it was possible to make. But they never stopped trying.
“But I’m very optimistic about next year, just to get to a grand final is amazing. The Eagles showed they are a top team.”
Fan Andrew Senior said the Eagles made a string of unforced errors in the second half.
He added: “It was disappointing, all the way through the play--offs they were so clinical and never made any mistakes, today was totally different. Plus Featherstone are a brilliant team.
“But it was a great game and a great season and we clapped them off the pitch at the end.”
Mark Webster, secretary of the supporters’ club and Eagles volunteer, said Featherstone were worthy winners and there was no disgrace in losing to a better side.
He added: “They really went at it early on, we made too many mistakes and in the end class told.
“But I’m very proud of what we’ve achieved this season and the future of the club is very strong.”
