Stupid rugby

DONCASTER Knights are still looking for their first Championship win of the season after going down to a 17-14 defeat at home to Coventry.

Ali Warnock had a chance to earn Knights a draw with a long-range penalty in stoppage time, but his kick was wide and short.

Knights didn't finish empty-handed, however, and banked their first bonus point of the season.

But that did little to appease director of rugby Lynn Howells.

"It was of no consolation; none whatsoever," said the Welshman. "I thought that we were very fortunate to come away with a point.

"It was very disappointing. We tried to force the game too much in the first half.

"We tried to offload the ball in stupid places. We had scoring opportunities in their half but we turned the ball over.

"In the second half we just fell off too many first-up tackles. You've got to make those tackles, otherwise you are just giving your opponents easy metres.

"I still think that we are lacking in confidence. We showed in parts that we are able to play the game.

"It is just about people making the right decisions at the right time and at the moment we haven't got those people making the right decisions.

"We are frenetic and we are trying to win the game from stupid areas of the field. It's a losing mentality.

"I thought that we were a lot better than we were last week. We are getting better, but you don't get the time that you need to improve at this level."

Knights' hopes of recording their first league win of the season continue to be affected by injuries, with fly-half James Brooks and scrum-half Matt D'Arcy both set to miss Saturday's long trip to Plymouth. "That's 13 players out injured," said Howells. "We'll just keep working hard. The boys work very hard and there is a good spirit in the camp."
