Stock steps up recovery
DONCASTER Rovers skipper Brian Stock has moved a step closer his long-awaited comeback following ankle surgery in September.
"Brian joined in with the rest of the squad yesterday," said manager Sean O'Driscoll. "It was limited, but he joined in.
"Brian will travel with the team to Derby tomorrow and do the pre-match preparation with the squad just as a way of getting him involved with the squad again.
"Touch wood, he's felt no problem with his ankle so far.
"We are pushing him as much as we can within the bounds of safety. He's done everything that we've asked him to do, so again he's almost there.
"He's ahead of schedule so I think we've pushed him sensibly and he's not had any setbacks.
"He's had an injury which needed to be managed properly, but if we did that he'd be fine and we knew that, so there was no point in cutting corners.
"At some point next week, he'll join in fully, with constraints, so that we can assess him.
"As and when he'll be ready, there is no point saying that he'll be back by a particular game.
"We won't do anything until Brian is ready and the medical team say he can do it.
"Ideally, if you had to plan it you'd play him for half an hour in a practice game and then you'd play him for 75 minutes.
"Maybe we'll have to quicken things up a little bit. But it depends how he does when he gets back into first-team training and he starts getting whacks on his ankle and a few tackles in.
"We'll have to wait and see what happens. We don't want any reaction, but he's been fine."
The prospects of Stock being back playing sooner rather than later, are improved by the fact that he has shown before than he can operate without a great deal of training.
"When he's been out injured in the past, with back and ankle problems,he usually hasn't trained all week but played on Saturday, so he is quite used to it," said O'Driscoll.
