Sheffield Eagles new signing Jon Molloy looks set to miss tomorrow’s Kingstone Press Championship showdown with Whitehaven.

The second-rower was instrumental in the Eagles’ 40-6 victory over London Broncos last weekend, but director of rugby Mark Aston revealed a virus looks set to rule out the former Salford and Huddersfield man.

“Jon has had a sickness bug this week so he is a doubt and probably won’t make it,” Aston told The Star.

“That is disappointing because he was sensational for us last week and made a real impact.

“We don’t need something like that spreading in the camp so he has not been around the place. He is a great lad, I think the world of him and I believe that he will be really good for us so there is no point in risking him if he isn’t fit.”

The versatile John Davies set to be included in the squad after being sidelined for the opening two rounds of the season.

“John Davies passed a fitness test and he looked good so we are confident he will be available,” Aston said of the Eagles’ close-season signing.

“He is desperate to play and he has trained really hard this week so he has put his hand up for selection, which is great news.”

Whitehaven are winless after back-to-back defeats against Bradford and Halifax, but Aston believes they will be buoyed by the news that caretaker James Coyle has been handed the coaching reins on a full-time basis.

“When a new coach is appointed it is usually followed by a positive reaction from his team,” Aston warned.

“It is always tough going to Whitehaven and we have come unstuck there over the last couple of years. They are big and tough with some very good players in their ranks.

“I know Dave Allen really well from my time as coach of Ireland and I know he is a very good player, whileJessie Joe Parker is a full international with Papua New Guinea.”
