THE last of Sheffield Eagles new signings Matt Garside is in line for a debut in the opening home league game.
Garside, signed from York Knights, sat out the first round trip to Halifax but coach Mark Aston is keen to see all his players in action early in the season.
“The new lads have come here to play and we need to see where they are at,” said Aston. “Matt and all the lads have been working hard in training.”
Eagles tough opening to the new season continues with Batley Bulldogs due to come to Don Valley Stadium on Friday night.
The Bulldogs, coached by former Eagle’ boss John Kear, hammered Keighley 42-10 in the opening round of Championship games.
Doubts over prop Liam Higgins could open the way for Garside who played 23 games at either centre or in the back row for York last season.
Higgins faces tests after being knocked out and missing the second half of the 18-10 defeat at Halifax.
Aston has front row cover in Peter Green and Colton Roche who made his debut at the Shay after signing from Leeds Rhinos.
“The forwards were okay for the majority of the game at Halifax,” said Aston. “We couldn’t play Liam in the second half, he got knocked out and couldn’t come back on so for a full 40 minutes we only had three substitutes.
“Peter Green was very good, Alex Szostak made a big effort. Jack Howieson and Mitch Stringer looked comfortable early on, they blew a bit but they’re big guys and that happens. Colton looked strong but blew himself out.”
