Sheffield Eagles have bagged a second signing from Super League side St Helens after agreeing a two-year deal with Dave Hewitt.
The half-back, 19, joins fellow rising star Matty Fozard in committing their future to the new look Eagles, as director of rugby Mark Aston continues his close season rebuilding programme.
Hewitt, a former England youth international, is the latest in a long line of young individuals with Super League experience that Aston has identified as being of the right stature to flourish in the Eagles’ full-time setup.
“I am exciting about working with him,” Aston told The Star.
“He is a good young player with a massive reputation. He is really highly-regarded and maybe those big expectations have affected him, but he is still only a teenager. We are not expecting him to be the finished article yet, there is a development path for Dave that we need to embark on.
“We are delighted to have him. He is another piece of the jigsaw, and whilst we are going full-time we still need players here that we can develop.”
From the age of 16, when Hewitt joined Saints from local club Bold Miners, he was touted as having a big future in the game. Aston is convinced the St Helens-born ace has what it takes to succeed, after consulting a number of high profile figures in the game.
“People who I know and respect within the game have said that they think he has massiv potential, so the challenge for me is to get that out of him,” Aston re-enforced.
“The chief scout for Wigan contacted me to see if I was interested in him and I said yes, but I needed to know more about him. He told me as 16-year-old Dave was one of the hottest properties around. All the clubs over there Wigan, Saints and Warrington, wanted him and he went to his home town club because that is where he wanted to be. He has been full-time with St. Helens over the last 12 months so he has been around some good players who have helped with his education, which is fantastic.”
Aston confirmed that loose forward Dave Petersen has left the club after a short stint, whilst half-back Kyle Briggs remains with the Eagles on a part-time contract.
