SHEFFIELD Eagles took their first every Co-operative Championship Grand Final – their biggest prize since the Challenge Cup win in 1998.

It was a great day for South Yorkshire rugby league with Doncaster winning the Championship One trophy.

The Eagles 20-16 win over Featherstone Rovers avenged their defeat in last year’s final and for coach Mark Aston was a reward for the effort of rebuilding the club.

“It makes all the last 13 years worthwhile but you have to take your hat off to the group of players out there,” he said. “We don’t get the recognition and that motivates the players and there’s a desire to be as good as we can be.

“The players were outstanding and first class. We have bounced back and you have to lose one to win one.

“Thirteen years ago, there was nothing and now we are ranked as the best team in the competition.”
