Sheffield Eagles have signed a third player from Salford Red Devils and he is set to make his debut against Swinton Lions.

Hooker Gareth Owen, 21, joins Will Hope and John Ford who have already joined the Championship title-holders on season long loans. Owen has made 34 appearances for the Super League club since joining them in 2010 and played 16 games last season scoring two tries.

His signing boosts the options at nine and comes as hooker James Davey dislocated a finger in training and is doubtful for the trip to Leigh Sports Village on Sunday, kick-off 3pm.

Coach Mark Aston said: “Gareth trained with us and he looks comfortable and has played quite a few Super League games. He’s quick and can play a bit. He’ll give us a few options and there’s competition for places.”

The Eagles aim to make up for lost time after the return to Owlerton Stadium was washed up last weekend.

“It’ll be good to be playing,” said Aston. “After the disappointment of last Sunday, the lads are really enthusiastic and ready.

“We’re going to a ground at Leigh that has a big wide pitch where we are able to play football and suits our style of play.”

Swinton will be boosted by dual registration players under a deal with Warrington Wolves. The Lions narrowly avoided relegation last year and with five teams going down this season they need points from home games.

In their opening game of the season they put in a strong performance at Halifax before going down 28-18.

“You can’t be sure what you are getting with Swinton – it depends on who they can bring in from Warrington,” said Aston. “At Halifax they had Jordan Burke and Kevin Penny. This week they may have a few more.

“Swinton are pretty desperate, they need a good start to the season and played well at Halifax and there was only 10 points between the teams.”

Ben Jones, signed from Dewsbury, is set to make his Eagles debut.
