SHEFFIELD Eagles coach Mark Aston is closing in on signing a forward from Leeds Rhinos.
“The lad can play prop or in the back row and he would go into our first team squad for next season,” said Aston. “He’s been on the fringe of the Super League and is the type of player I want.”
One signing that has gone through is highly-rated teenager Liam Ellis joining the Eagles from York City Knights
The prop or back rower became York’s youngest ever player when he made his Championship debut aged 17 years and 19 days last season.
Ellis went on to play three games for the Knights but has signed a deal at the Eagles for the 2013 season. He will join the Eagles Academy squad with the target of breaking into the first team.
“Liam’s a hard-working, strong-running forward who has already played in the Championship at York,” said Eagles community and development manager Darren Higgins.
The teenager from Morley is a student at the Wakefield College Rugby League Development Centre.
Higgins added: “Liam sees the potential of Sheffield Eagles. The fact that we run a team in the Super League Academy competition was the deciding factor.”
