Sheffield Eagles players won’t let the uncertainty surrounding the club’s future cast a shadow over their determination to book a place in the play-off semi-finals.

A last chance to keep hopes of defending the Championship title comes when they play Dewsbury Rams in the last ever game at Don Valley on Sunday. Captain Mitch Stringer says the focus is on that game and not the search for a new home. “As players we worry about our performances” he said. “We are confident the club will sort something out.”

A return to Owlerton Stadium – where the club started life 29 years ago – has emerged as a possible solution. Eagles officials meet the stadium managers today. A successful move would need one-off council financial backing. Stringer added: “We’re one of the most successful teams in Sheffield and do massive work in the community. It beggars belief that the council wouldn’t help us” said Stringer.

A win will give Eagles a semi-final at Halifax on Thursday. Winger Misi Taulapapa said: “This is our last chance. There’s a question mark where we will be playing but it won’t affect us.”
