Sheffield Eagles’ coach Mark Aston will have the ‘big three’ back in his forward pack for today’s trip to Whitehaven.
He’s set to recall regulars Jack Howieson, Duane Straugheir and Alex Szostak who he rested for the derby win over Doncaster.
Prop forward Liam Higgins could also earn call up after missing the last three games with an ankle injury. Peter Green is a doubt with a dead leg. Aston took a risk in leaving three regular starting players on the sidelines for a game in which the Eagles were tested before winning 32-26.
“I took a chance” said Aston. “Those three will be fresh and there are others who can come in. But when you talk about the changes we made they were 100% capable players. There were some who played a bit longer (against Doncaster) than I expected but we had to win and the important thing was to get the result.”
Aston was critical of some of the defending adding: “Credit where credit is due, Doncaster went about their business well. We let in 26 points the most that have been scored against us this season and that shows the softness we had. Mitch Stringer was good, Menzie Yere was strong and Michael Knowles is playing like we know he can but there were some who let the team down.”
Eagles travel to Whitehaven defending a seven game winning run that has taken them into second place in the league four points behind Halifax but with a game in hand. Haven lost 28-16 at Workington on Friday but ran Halifax close in their last home game.
