Sheffield Eagles produced a second half try-scoring blast to beat Barrow Raiders 44-18 at the Don Valley Stadium.
After a dull opening 40 minutes the Eagles turned on the style with prop forward Mitch Stringer being rewarded for a dominant display with two tries.
“We got a bit more tempo and a bit more purpose in the second half,” said coach Mark Aston. “We talked about it at half-time; there were some home truths and we got back into it.”
The kick-off was delayed to 3.30 pm after the Barrow team coach was caught in delays on the M62.
Eagles took the lead on 20 minutes with following a scrum 40 metres Menzie Yere caught Barrow cold to bust the line and go in for the try. Brambani added the goal.
The advantage was doubled as loose forward Joe Hirst followed up a chip kick by Patch Walker and touch ed down. Brambani added the goal. It seemed the Eagles were in control but tries by Liam Harrison and Kurt Haggerty just before half-time levelled the score at 12-12.
Eagles stormed ahead from the restart with substitute prop Dario Esposito’s break sending in Yere for his second try. A swirling wind sent Brambani’s conversion attempt glancing off the upright.
A knock on gifted the Eagles possession and Tom Armstrong split the line before sending in Walker under the posts.
Stringer produced a blasting run to crash over for his second try. Brambani hit the upright with the first kick but added the second.
Barrow came back helped by a couple of penalties before centre Max Wiper took a long pass to go over with Haggerty adding the goal.
The revival was snuffed out as Stringer crashed over and Brambani added the goal.
Barrow were starting to look jaded as Brambani dummied before sweeping in and fullback Laulu-Togagae’s angled run took him over. Brambani added both goals.
