RECORDS tumbled as Sheffield Eagles went on the rampage against amateurs Leigh East in the third round of the Challenge Cup scoring 19 tries.

For the first time Eagles scored more than 100 points with the record for tries scored by an individual player and goals kicked equalled.

Coach Mark Aston had the personal satisfaction of seeing his 18-year-old son Cory play a full 80 minutes on his senior debut and score two tries.

“I’m delighted we need that flush out after two poor games,” said Aston. “We were clinical and professional.”

He added: “Cory was outstanding, to be asked to step up out of the blue and he set up three or four tries. It will give him confidence. I’m massively proud.”

Centre Menzie Yere set the Eagles on their way blasting through the line on three minutes. Wingers Vinney Finigan and Misi Taulapapa were soon on the scoresheet and Cory Aston twice provided the pass for Yere to go in for the centre to complete his hat-trick in 17 minutes.

Full-back Quentin Laulu-Togagae swept in under the posts and the biggest cheer came when Aston junior intercepted a pass and went 80 metres raising his arm in joy before touching down.

Poor covering on the last tackle allowed centre Gavin Hunter to go over from dummy half and Ryan Peters added the two for Leigh’s only points.

Tries from Patch Walker and James Davey brought up the 50 points and there was still time for Alex Szostak and Laulu-Togagae to cross the whte line. Brambani missed only one conversion to give the Eagles 64-6 lead at half-time.

Walker claimed his second try soon after the restart followed by Yere going in and Laulu-Togagae completing his hat-trick.

Yere’s fifth try equalled Daryl Powell’s a club record in a game. Brambani added goal 14 to match the conversion record before being substituted

Connor Scott and Aston both went under the posts. Michael Knowles kicked the goals to bring up the 100 points.

Joe Hirst side-stepped through and with the hooter about to sound Davey went under the posts. Knowles added the conversions.
