SHEFFIELD Eagles’ chairman Ian Swire has expressed his delight at joining forces with French Elite One club Limoux Grizzlies.
The agreement between the two clubs with see the exchange of players and coaches, and arrangements are being made for Limoux to host a pre-season training camp for the Eagles.
The teams will also play in friendly at Stade de l’Aiguille as the Eagles prepare to defend their Co-operative Championship title in 2013.
Swire said: “Whilst other Championship clubs are entering partnerships with Super League clubs, we do not consider that to be in the best long-term interests of rugby league development in South Yorkshire.
“We do, however, consider that by giving our youngsters the opportunity to play at a high level in France and also giving the French counterparts the chance to participate in our development structures benefits both of the clubs.”
Frederic Teixido, a Limoux director who played for Sheffield in their final Super League season in 1999, was involved in the negotiations.
Swire added: “I have known Freddie for about 15 years and in 2011 he introduced me to Laurent Moreno [Grizzlies president] and we found that we all shared a passion for development of the game, particularly youth.”
