Sheffield Eagles 12
Hunslet Hawks 16
A LATE try snuffed out a second half revival by Sheffield Eagles and sent them crashing out of the Northern Rail Cup.
The Eagles had battled back into the game and had taken the lead with eight minutes to play when Danny Grimshaw raced in for the score that gave Hawks a place in the quarter-finals. “It’s a massive disappointment, we looked like a ship without as rudder at times” said coach Mark Aston.
“Lapses of concentration cost us. We’re not playing as a team.” Hunslet took the lead with an angled run taking second rower Tommy Haughey in for the try. Danny Ratcliffe added the goal. Eagles were struggling to complete their sets and get out of their half.
Eagles centre Menzie Yere was put on report after a heavy tackle on Haughey shortly before half-time.
The second half burst into life with the Eagles playing their best rugby and going level as a kick by Brown was misjudged by Ratcliffe and Yere followed up and diving full-length just touched down. Simon Brown added the goal.
Within minutes Hunslet edged back into the lead as indiscipline by the Eagles gave two penalties in front of the posts in a five minute spell with Ratcliffe kicking both. Eagles snatched back the lead when Andrew Henderson switched play from wide on the left with a pass to Brown who put in a high kick which former Eagles winger Richie Barnett fumbled into the arms of Corey Hanson for the centre to force his way over. Brown added the goal.
Hunslet had a chance to draw level but Ratcliffe pulled a straight kick from 35 metres wide.
Hunslet came through a poor spell and as the Eagles desperately tried to hang on to their slender lead Grimshaw saw a gap open in the Eagles line and the stand off raced in fr the vital try. Ratcliffe added the goal.
