Sheffield Eagles gained their first double of the season and perhaps more importantly only their second league win at Owlerton Stadium in a 37-24 victory over Workington Town.
There were scares with the Eagles allowing an 18-point lead to evaporate in the sun as they gave away a string of penalties and had a man sin binned.
A late flurry of points calmed the nerves and ensured that they stay away from the relegation zone.
“It was a win and we needed to get one just to settle the lads down, but we had to win it twice,” said coach Mark Aston.
“At 30 points to 12 up the game should have been dead and buried and yet we show disrespect and go away from what we have talked about pre-game.”
Stand-off Patch Walker justified his recall by having a hand or a boot in most of the Eagles tries with fullback Quentin Laulu-Togagae and winger Scott Turner each scoring two tries.
A solo break out of nothing by Laulu-Togagae set up an early try for Turner converted by Walker – the first of his six goals.
Eagles let the momentum slip and Town came back with tries from scrum-half Callum Phillips and his second row brother Brett. Carl Forber added the goals.
A break by Laulu-Tagagae provided the spark Eagles desperately needed as he sent in Misi Taulapapa and with Turner just getting to a Walker chip to the corner they had a face-saving 18-12 lead at half-time.
Laulu-Togagae coming into the line put the Eagles in control following the restart with his pace decisive as he scored two tries in three minutes.
What should have been a comfortable lead came under pressure after Taulapapa was sent to the sin bin for dissent.
Brett Phillips blasted over for his second try and centre Jarrad Stack’s quick tap penalty caught the Eagles napping.
Laulu-Togagae had the chance to settle those fears as he split the line but his pass was wild and when Greg Burke went in under the posts the scores were level with five minutes to play.
Walker was held on the line but from play-the-ball Dominic Brambani, who had started on the bench, was there to put over the drop goal.
Town put the restart kick dead and with seconds to go hooker Andrew Henderson forced his way over from dummy half with Walker keeping up his impressive goal kicking.
