As all the fun and games of football’s transfer deadline day took place, yesterday also marked the day in which rugby league clubs could begin their winter business.

In truth, several deals have already been wrapped up across the sport, and it is no different in Sheffield, where the Eagles confirmed the much rumoured departure of Matt Garside to London Broncos.

Garside joined Sheffield from York City Knights before the start of last season, and will take up a full-time contract with the relegated Broncos following the culmination of this year’s campaign.

Eagles coach Mark Aston is disappointed to lose the second-rower, but can understand his decision.

He said: “We’re sorry to see him go because over the last two years he has started to develop into a very good player.

“He’s going full-time which is the reason he has left; we’re not in a position to offer him that at the moment. Now we will look to bring in a suitable replacement.”

The Eagles are expected to announce at least one new signing this week.

Sunday’s win at Featherstone continued their upturn in fortunes, recording their fifth consecutive victory with a 28-40 victory at Post Office Road.

Sheffield face their final league fixture at Rochdale this weekend, before beginning their playoff challenge in which they will be looking to land a third Championship crown in as many years.

Aston said: “We always try to improve as the season goes on and we seem to have found a little bit of consistency which has been lacking throughout the season.

Last season it was all about becoming the first team to go back-to-back, now we want to become the first to win three in a row.

“We’ve got some big players who like to play on big stages and I think that is inspiring them.”
