The clock beat Sheffield Eagles as they made a thrilling bid to snatch an unlikely win in the final minutes before going down 30-28 at Halifax.

After a stuttering performance for most of the game Mark Aston’s team twice pulled back the deficit to two points in a clash where the final margin was a penalty.

“Great attitude, loads of effort and commitment,” he said. “We’re not the smartest team and we are only going to get better, this gives us a bit of a boost. I’m proud of the lads and they had a dig.”

Duane Straugheir came in at loose-forward for his first game of the season with reserve Alex Palmer and new signing Shaun Squires making their Eagles debut off the bench.

A try and goal from centre Steve Tryer gave the home team an early lead at the New Shay.

Eagles hit back with Patch Walker’s short pass sending Menzie Yere in on the burst to celebrate his 150th game with a try.

Fax were dominating possession and tries from wingers Tommy Saxton and Gareth Potts pushed out their lead with Tyrer kicking one goal.

Back rower Matt Garside pulled a score back and Dominic Brambani added the goal but Halifax led 16-10 at half-time.

A tense spell after the restart was ended by a penalty kick by Tyrer which was to prove the decisive score between the teams. Saxton went in at the corner for his second try and with Tyrer’s goal Fax looked in control.

Suddenly the Eagles started to play with Garside scrambling over from a pass by Quentin Laulu-Togagae for his second try.

Winger Scott Turner went in from the half-way line and with Brambani adding the goals Eagles had cut the deficit to two points.

The comeback looked to be over with a try from prop Luke Ambler and Tyrer’s fifth goal.

Eagles went for broke from the restart and Brambani went over from dummy half and added the goal to yet again cut the deficit to two points. Turner almost produced a break in the final seconds but Eagles had to settle for a losing bonus point.
