Keighley Cougars 23 Sheffield Eagles 16

Referee Matt Thomson lost count of the tackles and awarded Keighley’s first try on the seventh play of a set.

Late in the second half the referee seemed to award Dominic Brambani a try then reversed the decision for offside on the advice of the touch judge.

Coach Mark Aston says reviews of the match dvd will confirm the error.

“Take away those points and we would have won. The first try was on the seventh play and for me Dom’s try was fine,” he said. “I’ll be bringing both the incidents to the attention of the authorities.”

Eagles struggled to break down the competition’s meanest defence in a game where their attacking style was washed away by almost constant rain.

Confusion in defence as the referee allowed play to continue after the sixth tackle saw Craig Moss pick up a loose ball for the first try.

Half-back Sam Obst went through a massive gap for a try under the posts and Danny Lawton added the goal.

Keighley’s indiscipline gave up possession from a string of penalties and the Eagles hit back with Andrew Hensderson providing the final pass for centre Misi Taulapapa.

Simon Brown came off the bench and the stand-off had an immediate impact with a 40-20 plus a series of testing long kicks.

Brambani, Quentin Laulu-Togagae and Taulapapa produced a sweeping passing move to send Nev Morrison in for his fourth try in three games and Brown’s goal brought the Eagles level at 10-10 at half-time.

Two tries soon after the restart put Keighly back ahead. Jy-mel Coleman intercepted a pass and raced 70 metres for the try and Lawton took Obst’s high kick to touch down before adding the goal.

Eagles came back strongly and Taulapapa jumped high to collect Brown’s high cross field kick for his second try. Brown added the goal.

Lawton kicked a penalty to extend Keighley’s lead but Eagles were battling to regain the lead.

Those hopes went as the touch judge ruled out a Brambani try for offside before Obst dropped a goal in the final minute and the Eagles had to settle for a losing bonus point.
