Sheffield Eagles have secured a deal to sign hooker Matty Fozard from Super League giants St. Helens.

The 20-year-old has penned a two-year contract with the Eagles and becomes director of rugby Mark Aston’s third close season signing following the arrivals of Oldham duo Adam Neal and George Tyson.

Fozard, who is a full Wales international, made his debut for the Saints in 2014 against Widnes Vikings, and his arrival continues the Eagles’ close season philosophy of bringing young players into the full-time fold.

“He has come out of the system at St. Helens where he has been full-time over the last year or so,” Aston told The Star.

“He is 20-year-old and I have always been about going out and finding them kids that can go on and on, and I think that Matty has got that.

“He has signed a two-year contract and has committed himself to moving over to Sheffield, just like George, because he wants to be in and around the place and wants to feel part of it. He wants to move onto the next chapter of his life and it is exciting for him.”

The Widnes-born starlet made his debut for Wales in 2014 and has two caps to his name, but was ruled out of the European Championships after sustaining a broken jaw.

Aston is looking forward to help bring out the talents of the versatile operator, who can also play anywhere in the pack, but it is at number nine where he expects to see the best of the Welshman.

“He represented Wales last year and was in the squad this year, but injured his jaw in a training ground accident three weeks ago so he misses out on that unfortunately,” Aston confimed.

“He is a typical St. Helens number nine right out of the mould of Kieron Cunningham, he is tough and his skill sets are really outstanding so we are really looking forward to working with him. He is young, he has many years in front of him and I think that we can really help develop something special for him and for us as a club.”

Aston’s squad is now starting to come together with another player expected to sign fresh terms this week following Friday’s announcement that centre Menzie Yere signed a new rolling contract with the club.
