Sheffield Eagles made hard work of booking their place in today’s fifth round draw of the Tetley’s Challenge Cup with a 30-16 home win over Dewsbury.

A poor first half saw Eagles provide three ‘assists’ to help catapult the Rams into a 16-0 lead.

But Dewsbury weren’t able to extend their advantage and a very different Eagles turned the game around with secnd half tries.

Coach Mark Aston said it had been “probably the most frustrating” first half this season, adding: “In the second half we put the wrongs right, it was back to basics, we played behind a kicking game a bit and ground Dewsbury down.”

“I was straight with them at half-time, there were a few choice words but there is nothing I can do after the team cross the line. They have to do it.”

Dewsbury went ahead on four minutes as possession was given away and hooker Matthew Tebb went over from dummy half.

Misi Taulapapa’s hesitation gifted Dale Morton a touch down. Poor defence on the right gave Morton a second and Bobbie Goulding converted the first two tries.

Eagles steadied with forwards Mitch Stringer and Colton Roche making their presence felt.

Matt Garside was denied a try for a forward pass soon after the restart but MenzieYere got free on the left with Joe Hirst passing inside for the fullback Quentin Laulu-Togage to finish the job.

Eagles looked a different team as Laulu-Togagae hugged the line before putting a looping pass inside to Scott Turner who sent his former Dewsbury team-mate Patch Walker in.

Eagles took the lead on 61 minutes when a Dominic Brambabi kick was fumbled, Walker flicked the ball to Duane Straugheir and Garside went under the posts.

Dewsbury were flagging and Andrew Henderson’s quick tap sent Stringer sweeping in for a deserved try. Taulapapa’s afternoon ended on a high taking a pass from Laulu-Togagae to cross.
